All over the cricketing world, record keepers , statisticians , stat gurus etc have been kept on their toes during the 2023 Cricket World Cup held in India as a plethora of records have been broken so far in the tournament
1.Fastest CWC Century - Aiden Markram
In 2011, Ireland's Kevin O Brien hit a 50 ball century against England at Bangalore to defeat their more illustrious British counterparts. Since then many people came close to breaking the record but in the end it took 12 years and a return to India for the record to be broken. South Africa's Aiden Markram against Sri Lanka bettered it by a solitary hitting 14 fours and 3 sixes to hammer the Sri Lankans.
In a tournament with a dozen centuries recorded in 10 matches, the prospect of Markram keeping the record until the end of the 2023 tournament is by no means guaranteed.
Rohit Sharma and Kusal Mendis have recorded 63 and 65-ball centuries already at Cricket World Cup 2023, and the tournament promises high scores even if the pitches become slower in due course.
2. Highest CWC total: South Africa (428/5)
Although Markram stole the show with his 100 that day , it would be a fools errand to not acknowlege the Proteas Batting power house that delviered an quite staggering total of 428/5 at Cricket's most prestigious tournament. After a measured opening 10 overs, the Proteas moved at seven-an-over from overs 11 to 20, before 88 runs were compiled from overs 21-30. Incredibly, the team scored 137 runs in a final 10-over blitz
Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock joined Markram as centurions in what was a demolition of the Sri Lankan bowling attack, and it was just the fourth time in an ODI (and first at the Cricket World Cup) where a team's batting scorecard had three centuries written on it.
The 107 boundaries across both innings was the most in a World Cup game, and it was the highest aggregate for a men's ODI World Cup match, going past the 714 runs in the 2019 game between Australia and Bangladesh in Nottingham.
3. Most CWC hundreds (7) and most international sixes (556): Rohit Sharma
.When Rohit Sharma is in full flow, nothing can stop him and this was in full display in India's game against Afghanistan as chasing a challenging total of 273 , Sharma blitzed to an hundred in just 63 balls and was dismissed only after scoring a 131 runs in just 84 balls
In his trademark style of combining brash & balance, Rohit hit 16 fours and 5 sixes , as during the innings he went clear of the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's record of 6 CWC hundreds with Rohit now having 7 to his name. Rohit has achieved this record in just 19 innings compared to Sachin's 44 innings with a greater average of 65.23 as compared to the latter's 56.95
The 5 sixes Rohit struck at the Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi also moved him to 556 sixes across all 3 formats breaking Chris Gayle's record . Rohit passed Gayle having played 80 less innings.
4. Highest Succesful CWC chase : Pakistan (345 against Sri Lanka)
Mohammed Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique scored two world class hundreds against Sri Lanka to lift Pakistan to the highest ever succesful chase in a CWC game in a quite incredible performance at Hyderabad
At 37/2, with Babar Azam gone , Shafique with his poise and Rizwan presence helped build a strong platform , mixing power and technique to put on a 176 run partnership with ease , Although Shafique fell for 113(103), Rizwan (*131 from 121 balls) and Iftikhar Ahmed's quick cameo helped chase the target down with 10 balls to spare
